Robert DeVries

My name is Robert DeVries, and I live in Windmill Estates in Holland, Michigan. I moved here in 2014 to take care of my ailing mother. Since my mother passed earlier this year, I’ve been helping some of my elderly neighbors who live on fixed incomes and need help around the house. These are the folks I worry about the most.

Robert stands in front of his home. He is wearing jeans, a red shirt, and a gray hat.

Since Havenpark bought the property, everything feels like an ‘us against them’ battle. So much has changed. Rent has increased and our monthly bills include new charges which are hard to understand. We were forced to sign a new list of rules. Our previous owners would talk to us face-to-face, but Havenpark will leave ‘warnings’ on our doors instead of initiating a conversation. I suspect they’re looking for reasons to issue warnings – I was recently cited for keeping a tire in my garage. The warning arrived almost instantaneously.

We’re really walking on eggshells here. I fear I’m going to be priced out or kicked out at any moment. It’s just plain scary. Luckily, I am able to maintain my property, but the same can’t be said for my elderly neighbors.

Since I’ve become involved with MHAction, I’ve learned about my rights as a manufactured home owner. I’ve also learned that my community isn’t alone. I am still hopeful for a future where we don’t have to live in fear.
