Marilyn Langley
I’m Marilyn Langley. I’m 70 years old and I live in Pine Ridge Mobile Home Park in Argentine, Michigan. I moved here over 30 years ago because it was an affordable way to live, and I’ve always loved the quiet atmosphere. In 2016, the lot rent was only $365, and I was able to buy my home.
But when Havenpark came in 2018, they kept raising the rent. Worse, Havenpark didn’t give us any lease to sign. With lot rent and added fees continuing to increase – we now have to pay for trash, sewage, and random administrative fees – I pay over $530 a month. They’ve installed water meters, even though we have a well, and charged us $6 for the installation fee. We don’t know what to believe about what we’re paying. I question everything Havenpark does. It often feels that they’re lying to us.
They say they’re adding new amenities for us, but even when they added a basketball court, it was only big enough for two people to play. The play area club house is only big enough for a few families. We need a bigger storm shelter so our families can stay safe during dangerous weather.
My neighbors and I are on our last leg. We’re seniors on fixed income, we should be traveling and enjoying our retirement – not wondering if we can afford food, medication, fuel, utilities, and unpredictable fees from a corporate owner. Havenpark will do anything to make a profit off of us. I believe people are scared to stand up because they're scared to get pushed out of their homes.
